I remember my Mum, not my dad, taking me to the Saturday of a test at the Oval in the early to mid sixties. If my memory is right, he took a catch in the covers from a ball that hardly left the ground going at some speed. Have no idea who it was against though. I took to him from that day. RIP Sir.

I didn't know John Edrich, but played quite a bit with Jackers. 1400 1st class wickets form someone who was around 80mph.
He really was a classic bowler. Upright with a great hand position, he bowled away swing and off cutters from over the batsman's off stump. Miss the ball and you're bowled or lbw. If you get inside the line to avoid that, the chances are you'll nick it. Add in the odd bouncer, and he was a handful.
Add to that, h was a top bloke and willing to help anyone and share his knowledge.
RIP Jackers.

John Edrich was one of the first players I became aware of when I took an interest in Cricket in the early 70's. Top opening batsman, brave as a lion.
RIP John

Went on an overseas cricket tour about 25 years ago and John Edrich was one of the hosts, he was a lovely chap. Had time for everyone. So interesting hearing his thoughts on the days play. I think it was the same tour where Clive Radley was another host. Again top bloke, great laugh even though he was Spurs.

Re Bill Edrich
Edrich's three brothers, Brian, Eric and Geoff, and also his cousin, John, all played first-class cricket. Locally in Norfolk the Edriches were able to raise a full team of eleven. In 1938 a team composed entirely of Edriches beat Norfolk in a one-day match.[2]

As they were from Norfolk I will take your word for the exact family relationships. But the stand at Lords is named after the former Middlesex pair of Bill Edrich & Denis Compton. Compton was my Mum’s absolute idol so only surprised that neither me or my brother were called Denis.
John Edrich was the one who took on Lillee & Thomson and then the Windies in 1976 when he was in his late 30’s unlike Boycott. Him and the 40 something Close with no helmets against the 1976 West Indians was real courage

Bill Edrich was his cousin - not his father - another cousin, Geoff - played for Lancashire. I think that five of the family played county cricket.
There are tales - maybe apocryphal - of a complete XI of Edriches being fielded in their native county of Norfolk.
Who knows - anyway a terrific resilient and brave opener. He could score apace too - his 310 no against NZ contained 52 fours and 5 sixes - not bad.
RIP sir.
